Settling In Halifax After Your Military Posting

The practical setup steps that turn 'arrived' into 'settled.'

Your move is done. The boxes are in. Now the real settling in begins. This page covers the practical steps most families need to take in their first weeks in Halifax — the things that take time but cannot wait indefinitely.

Nova Scotia Health Card

Nova Scotia requires new residents to wait three months before provincial health coverage begins. Plan for this gap before you arrive: make sure your existing provincial coverage is maintained during the transition period, or ask your base medical about CAF health coverage options during the waiting period.

Finding a Family Doctor in Halifax

Halifax, like many parts of Canada, has a family doctor shortage. Register with the Need a Family Practice Registry as soon as you arrive — or even before you arrive, if possible. The wait for a family doctor can be lengthy, but registration is the required first step.

In the meantime, walk-in clinics and the IWK Health Centre (for children) provide care.

Driver's Licence and Vehicle Registration

New Nova Scotia residents must transfer their driver's licence within 90 days of establishing residency. You will need to visit an Access Nova Scotia location with your current licence, proof of Nova Scotia residency, and payment for transfer fees.

Banking and Finances

Most major Canadian banks and credit unions operate in Halifax. If you are banking with an institution that does not have a strong presence in HRM, consider opening an account with a local institution for day-to-day ease. SISIP Financial provides financial planning services specifically for CAF members — sisip.com

Community and Recreation

Halifax has extensive trail systems, waterfront access, and a strong community recreation network. Halifax Recreation operates community centres, arenas, and pools across HRM: halifax.ca/recreation

The MFRC Halifax also runs community events specifically designed to help posting families make local connections quickly.
