FAQ – Military Relocation

Q1. We’re a military family. How can you help us?

I am extremely familiar with your relocation package and I promise to make your move easier. There can be so many complications that come with moving and starting life over fresh, whether it is a new town or just a new house. There are so many things you need to remember, like changing your address, letting your banks & insurance companies know that you are moving, changing schools, etc. But before you make all of those arrangements, you need to know where you are being posted, when you have to move and how to make the move.  I understand the complexities of your situation and I can assist along the way.

Q2. Do you have experience with military or other relocations?

For over 20 years, I have successfully moved many members of the R.C.M.P and the Canadian Armed Forces. I’m a longstanding preferred supplier on the “The BGRS Preferred Vendor List” and am currently active on the suppliers list.  And, having served in the Canadian Armed Forces, I understand the unique needs of military members and I will go to great lengths to ensure your transition is efficient and smooth.

Q3. What is the common real estate closing date length in the Halifax Region”

It is generally 4-8 weeks but it can change depending on what time of the year it is.

Q4. When arranging my house hunting trip, how far ahead of my COS date should I plan?

You should plan approximately 8-9 weeks prior of your COS date. This would be a better time considering the average closing date is two months.

Q5. My house hunting trip is one week. Will that be enough time? How many days should I spend actually looking for a house?

Yes, one week should be fine. It usually takes about a day to negotiate a deal. The inspection could be a couple of days to set up. Then you should add a day or so just in case something unexpected happens. If you do some research ahead of time, a couple of good days should be enough.

Q6. What will you do for me when I arrive in Nova Scotia for my house hunting trip?

Rest assured I will do my best to completely clear my schedule from when you arrive until it is the time for you to leave; that way, I can give you my utmost attention. My goal is to find you the best home possible during the time that you are here.

Q7. Would you suggest that I have a house inspection? Also, what does it cost and will I be covered by my plan?

Yes, I highly recommend doing a home inspection. If you purchase a new home or a home that is under 5 years of age that is covered by a New Home Warranty, unfortunately your plan will not cover the inspection.

Q8. Are there any home inspectors, lawyers or insurance companies you recommend?

Q9. If I happen to see a house that interests me on the Internet, would you be able to get me more information via email?

Definitely. I can email you listings with full details. I can even send you additional information above and beyond what is available to you on the Internet because, after all, I’m right here on location.

Q10. I have been informed that I will be posted but I don't have the official word yet. I was interested in placing my house on the market immediately. What should I do?

Please do not put your house on the market right away. That can actually create some difficulties for yourself if you list your home before your postage message comes in. In this case, patience is definitely a virtue. Once your postage message arrives, we can get on it right away!

Q11. Can you recommend a military approved hotel that is nice?

Try the Holiday Inn Express on Kearney Lake Road, on the outskirts of Halifax. With a variety of services and facilities to choose from, such as an indoor pool, hot tub, and  exercise equipment, this hotel should accommodate all of your needs. You can reach them at 902-445-1100.

I also recommend Lakeview Inn and Suites located in the Bayers Lake Business Park, just outside of Halifax. This Inn has a unique outside enclosed patio for you to enjoy, as well as an exercise room or indoor pool, whatever your preference. Give them a call at 902-450-3020 or toll free at 1-877-355-3500 to make your travel arrangements.
