When Renting Makes More Sense Than Buying
Renting is worth considering if: your posting is under two years, you are not yet ready to buy, your family is not joining you immediately, or Halifax market conditions make buying financially unattractive for your situation. The IRP does not require you to buy a home — it supports whatever housing path you choose.
PMQ and SHQ: On-Base Housing at CFB Halifax
Permanent Married Quarters (PMQ) and Single Housing Quarters (SHQ) are available on and near the Halifax bases. PMQ availability at CFB Halifax varies — do not assume you will get a unit on your timeline. Apply as early as possible through your unit housing officer and have an off-base plan ready.
If you are at 12 Wing Shearwater, speak with the Shearwater housing office directly about what is available in that area.
The Halifax Rental Market
Halifax has experienced a tight rental market over recent years, with low vacancy and rising rents. Purpose-built rental apartments, basement suites, and semi-detached rental homes are the most common options for families. Popular areas for military renters include Dartmouth (close to Shearwater), Woodside and Eastern Passage, Bedford (convenient for both Halifax and Dartmouth bases), and Sackville (more affordable, with good highway access).
Expect to see competition for desirable units. Having your paperwork ready — employment letter, references, proof of income — will speed up your application.
Short-Term Furnished Options During Your HHT
If you are arriving before your permanent housing is secured, short-term furnished rentals and extended-stay hotels in the Halifax area provide temporary accommodation. Your IRP covers certain temporary housing costs — confirm what is covered with your CRSP file manager before booking.
